How to make Publicly Owned Fiber to the Premises Happen in Portland



What does a publicly-owned fiber to the home network look like, why is it a good idea, how could it work, and how does it get paid for?


I gave a talk at Ignite Portland 5 about why publicly owned fiber is the answer to our broadband needs. This time I’ll talk more about what it could look like, what forms user-ownership could take, and some ideas about how to make it happen.

    A volunteer, officer and board member for the local non-profit Personal Telco Project, a group dedicated to the idea that people should have a bigger say in how their networks are operated. We do that by building our own networks that we share with our communities, and by helping to educate others in how they can too. To date, we have done this using Wi-Fi technology.
