Beyond Leaning In: How to Negotiate to Get What You Want

Accepted Session
Short Form
Scheduled: Wednesday, June 25, 2014 from 2:30 – 3:15pm in B202/203

Now that you know how important it is to ask for want you want, come learn how to negotiate in a way that will get you what you need. For everyone of any gender identity who works at a company or freelances, who feels like a newb or an expert, this presentation will teach you effective, practical skills to improve your negotiations and deal confidently with conflicts.

Have you read “Lean In” but were left wondering how to negotiate for what you want? Did you follow the advice and “just ask” for what you wanted with less than stellar results? Do you give two figs for Sheryl Sandberg’s book but would really like to know how to manage conflict and negotiate for what you want with confidence?

This is the panel for you.

Specially designed for people who are intimidated by conflict or the idea of negotiating, this presentation will teach you effective, easy-to-use, practical skills to get what you need. You’ll learn how to ask for what you want, how to take control in a negotiation and how to feel confident no matter the situation. Go beyond the well-intentioned but not-always-helpful advice to “just ask” and learn how to negotiate.

Open to attendees of any and every gender identity, negotiation skill level and Facebook status.

Speaking experience

I'm a regular speaker at comic book conventions such as Emerald City Comicon, Stumptown Comics Fest (RIP) and GeekGirlCon on negotiation and intellectual property. I've taught for the Freelancers Union Freelance 360 series and spoke at Open Source Bridge last year with Paula Holm Jensen. This is an adaptation of one of my most popular talks, How to be a Negotiation Ninja, updated to address some of the negotiation misconceptions and frustrations I've seen arise in the wake of the "Lean In" phenomena.
